To rally teens to donate blood, we just had to hit the right notes.

Blood donations are critical to the health of our region, and the Pacific Northwest is facing an urgent shortage of donors. To address this, Bloodworks partnered with The Residency, co-founded by Macklemore, to launch ‘Where the Heart Lives,’ a free hip-hop concert series. Featuring original songs from talented upcoming artists, this initiative brings live performances to local high schools and colleges, aiming to raise awareness, inspire youth, and motivate community action to meet the pressing need for blood donations through the power of music.
To bolster the ‘Where the Heart Lives’ campaign, we designed and built a dynamic microsite as the digital hub for the program. Our primary goals were to educate the public about the importance of blood donations and inspire action through an engaging online experience.
The microsite features compelling images, videos from past performances, artist profiles, and original tracks presented in a custom-built audio playlist. Educational content in the form of infographics featuring blood donation statistics and facts creates an immersive experience that highlights the campaign’s energy and urgency.
Innovation Lab Enhancement
Considering the target audience and the dynamic energy of the program, we brainstormed ways to bring the campaign visuals to life. The swirl elements in the static graphics presented a perfect opportunity to create a vibrant animation effect that activates on hover.
To achieve this, we employed HTML5 Canvas for rendering the graphics and JavaScript for the animation logic, choosing Canvas for its efficiency in managing complex and dynamic visual content. To ensure a natural and fluid motion, we incorporated easing functions. Our code was structured to be modular and reusable, allowing for easy adjustments and scalability. This technical approach enabled us to create an engaging and responsive animation that enhances the overall user experience.
