End Donation Discrimination: Advocating for More Inclusive Blood Donation
End Donation Discrimination
A campaign for a more inclusive approach to blood donation.
When the U.S. was facing a historic blood shortage, FDA eligibility rules still prevented many gay and bisexual men from donating based on broad restrictions rather than individual risk.
GreenRubino launched #EndDonationDiscrimination to raise awareness of the policy, encourage people to advocate for change and help bring greater visibility to an issue affecting both equality and the nation's blood supply.
Advocacy helped lead to change
Since the campaign launched, the FDA has replaced its previous time-based restrictions for men who have sex with men with an individual risk assessment for all prospective donors. The change expanded eligibility while applying the same screening questions regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
For GreenRubino, it marked meaningful progress on an issue our team had been advocating around for years.
Recognition for the campaign
Our work on #EndDonationDiscrimination was recognized with a 2023 Gold Healthcare Digital Marketing Award, honoring the campaign's approach to using creative and communications to bring attention to an important public health issue.
