Winning the AI Recommendation: AEO for Travel and Hospitality Brands

AI is changing how travelers decide where to go, stay, dine and explore. Our new guide shows travel and hospitality marketers how to make sure their brands are part of the answer.
For years, travel discovery has been built around search. Travelers typed keywords into Google, compared links, visited booking sites and pieced together recommendations from multiple sources.
AI is changing that journey.
Instead of searching for “best hotels in Seattle” or “weekend trips from Portland,” travelers can ask increasingly specific questions: Where should I stay in Seattle for a romantic weekend near great restaurants? What wine regions can I visit without renting a car? Which family-friendly resorts have activities for teenagers?
And increasingly, AI provides the recommendation.
From search rankings to recommendations
Traditional SEO still matters. But ranking well in search results doesn't necessarily mean a brand will be understood, cited or recommended by AI.
AI systems build answers using information from across the digital ecosystem. That can include a brand's own website along with media coverage, destination guides, review platforms, OTAs, directories, social content and other authoritative third-party sources.
For travel and hospitality marketers, that expands the definition of visibility.
The question isn't simply “Do we rank?”
It's also “Does AI understand who we are, what makes us relevant and when to recommend us?”
What makes a brand visible to AI?
There isn't one switch to flip or optimization to make.
Strong AI visibility starts with a brand being clearly and consistently represented across the sources AI systems use to understand it. That means establishing clear entities, demonstrating authority and expertise, structuring information so it can be easily understood, and maintaining consistency across owned, earned and third-party channels.
For hospitality brands in particular, that third-party ecosystem matters. Travelers have always relied on reviews, media coverage, destination organizations, travel guides and booking platforms. Those sources can now help influence the answers AI systems provide as well.
Start by understanding where you stand
Before optimizing for AI visibility, brands need to understand how they're already appearing.
An AI visibility audit can examine the questions travelers are asking, which brands are being recommended, how your brand is represented and which sources appear to be influencing those answers. From there, marketers can identify gaps and prioritize the changes most likely to strengthen visibility.
The goal isn't to optimize for a single AI platform. It's to build a clearer, more authoritative digital presence that makes your brand easier to understand and recommend wherever discovery happens.
